Welcome to the Pavement Engineering
Homepage at CSIR. The Pavement Engineering Group
consists of engineers and scientists whose research activities concentrate
on the optimisation of pavement performance, through the study of the
interactions between pavement structure, loading, materials, and
environment. The ultimate aim of our research is to provide economical
solutions to the road infrastructure needs of South Africa.
To this end we have developed many tools which
assist pavement design engineers to design better roads. The most notable of
these is the Heavy Vehicle Simulator, which has been exported worldwide. We
also provide specialist consulting services to the road-building industry,
supported by our extensive materials testing laboratories.
